Australia's new wave of rap pool gets even deeper..

James Burgoyne, under the moniker of Frames, has been making music since the age of 14, with a wide-ranging set of influences from Red Hot Chili Peppers to Hilltop Hoods, before turning towards more contemporary dudes like Chance The Rapper and Flume in later years. The resultant mix has created something akin to future-bass-rap, and his new single Real Love captures the vibe to perfection. With an EP in the pipeline, we hit up Burgoyne to find out a little more about the Melbournian, and see what's coming up.

I’m a 21-year-old rapper from the east side of Melbourne that’s been making music since I was 14. Most of my songs are love songs coz love’s probably the most important thing in the world to me.

What kinda tunes we talkin’?

I make electronic/future-bass influenced pop/rap love songs and have been doing so for a bit over a year now. I also work on a lot of other styles of rap but the electronic stuff is what really separates me.

Production/writing process:

All the production in my music is in collaboration with some of my favourite producers in the country. All my writing is influenced either by situations I've been in or around. Emotions are the first thing I strive for when I approach each new song, well before I’ve even considered a topic.

Can you tell us about your new single, Real Love?

Real Love is a song based on a few relationships I was around at the time, I don't like to elaborate too much on my lyrics but this was focussing on two people growing apart from each other in a relationship and talks about what love should and shouldn't be.

Any shows coming up?

I’ve gone on a temporary hiatus from booking shows until my debut EP has been completed, which it nearly is.

What’s the rest of the year have in store?

I have a bunch of tracks to fill in the time between now and the release of my EP, I also have a super special video to share soon.

Where can we hear more of your music?
