More Frenzal Rhomb More Frenzal Rhomb

Frenzal Rhomb play the Waterloo Hotel on February 8 (evening) and February 9 (all ages, arvo), The Palladium, Surfers Paradise February 9 and the Sands Tavern Maroochydore February 10.

“We're coming to Brisbane, yes we are,” starts Frenzal's front guy Jay. I ask him if he'll be bringing his tartan suit this time round?

“At the end of the last tour we had to take the tartan suit out to the back of Lindsey's house and shoot it in the head, it was disgusting.”

What? The suit had a head?

“No not any more... It was really bad after that tour, I had it dry-cleaned a couple of times but it was really quite disgusting. It should be good though we've been away for a while. We did about two hundred shows last year mainly in Europe and in the out back of Australia.”

How'd people in Europe take you guys?

“I don't know I can't understand what they're saying; I think it was pretty good. It was the first time that we tried to do a headlining tour. People actually showed up to the shows and stuff we sold out quite a few places. That was quite surprising I was expecting like five people at every show. It was good it was packed for the most part.”

I heard Frenzal are going on tour with NoFX later in the year in America.

“Yeah we've actually playing with them in Newcastle tonight and doing some shows here while they're out for the Big Day Out. Then going to the states in March for a month up the East Coast and Canada. We'll get to talk to a whole bunch of bloody Americans.”

What's Fat Mike really like?

“He's fat and he's irritable and he gambles too much and swears a lot and drinks too much and takes too many drugs. He's really a very offensive man, but we love him.”

What's the Sydney scene like at the moment?

“It's our home so I got to give it some props. I really like Sydney a lot, there's a lot of really good bands here doing a lot of good stuff. There's more and more people putting on their own shows in neighbourhood centres and stuff like that which is really really good. It tends to happen when the venues kind of start to suck cock and you have to look for an alternative. I like the ideas of shows being set up in halls and stuff. There are a couple of more pubs now having more punk shows and what not. I went to a really good show just the other night; it was Mindsnare and The Nation Blue. Mindsnare were very good but it's a shame about their drummer though... They're an excellent band and their where stacks of people there, it was good. It was a little surprising. Sydney's a good place we've got the Sydney Harbour, you know the jewel in the crown of Australia.”

How are you health wise now?

“Good, really good. I lost a foot while I was over in Europe, I've only got one foot at the moment, apart from that...”

How'd you lose your foot then?

“We had this tour bus and… Actually as a matter of fact I couldn't really be bothered with this lie. But we did have a tour bus which is the first time we've had one of those crazy night liner things. We shared it with these guys from Israel. There this punk band called Useless ID. They were super cool guys.”

So obviously you guys aren't afraid of travelling and flying with all that stuff that happened the end of last year in America and what not?

“No, I probably think that this is one of the safest times to fly. I think a lot of people put there lives on hold ‘cause some arsehole flew a plane into some other arsehole’s building.”

Do you believe in anything spiritual, do believe in things like destiny?

“I think we have a booking agent called Destiny. That's a pretty big question.”

It really depends on your definition of spirituality.

“Yeah, it does. I don't throw fire or play bongos if that's what you mean. I think when your numbers up your numbers up I think you should just continue doing what you want to do and do it to the best of your ability and try not to hurt anyone along the way. Carry a few sort of values. It's something we've never really addressed as a band before.”

Anything else to add?

“Let me think if there was anything else I had to say? We've been in Europe, we're going to America and we're coming to Brisbane. Make me sound funny.”
