Stephen Bourke of Step Panther fame has a lot to say, and channelling a healthy dose of observational creativity and restlessness into another SM Jenkins EP has paid off big time.
The band’s new EP, Campbelltown, is named after the suburb in Western Sydney, which is where a lot of the ideas on the six-track effort where formed, as the singer-songwriter spent hours on the train and at the trainstation during trips to and from Sydney.
Lead single Sore Loser is an “anthem for the down-and-out”, which lends itself to the epic jams the band has become known for live, while its title track – with its catchy guitar hook and charming vocal melodies - talks about a day Bourke spent walking around the Campbelltown trainstation.
“I think the point of the song is to shine a positive perspective on this place,” Bourke said.
“It kind of has a reputation of being a bit derro and bogan and boring, but I found a lot of cool stuff to do while I was waiting around.”
Campbelltown is out this Friday via Hotel Motel Records before SM Jenkins hit the road in June and July in support.
