"It provides a really great, fun environment for everyone to learn."

The Con is that castle-like building in Macquarie Street, down near the Opera House. It is renowned for turning out many world-class musicians.

But what most people don't know is that The Con also offers a short course program for adults who want to learn music basics or to extend their musical knowledge in a collaborative group-learning environment. These courses range from complete beginner level through to some that are by audition.

All courses are held at The Con over an eight-week term, two hours per week. Some courses on offer in the Autumn term starting on 26 April include:

music fundamentals

jazz guitar or blues guitar

music theatre studio

world music ensemble

impro basics

jazz ensembles

electronic music production

sound recording basics

contemporary voice

Some of Sydney's top musos teach in this program, including the likes of Andrew Dickeson (jazz drummer), Brendan Clarke (bass), Margi de Ferranti (music theatre performer), Sally Marett (vocalist), Mike Price (jazz guitar) and Llew Kiek (world music expert).

We spoke to contemporary vocals teacher Sally Marett about her classes:

Do you think there are particular benefits to group classes rather than one-on-one lessons?

SM: Definitely. The feedback I get is that there is great camaraderie in a group class. A lot of students I get are nervous about performing in front of other people, but they really want to do it, so being in a group situation means that they have a supportive group around them. It provides a really great, fun environment for everyone to learn.

What skills do students learn in your classes?

SM: We cover the basics of contemporary vocal technique, including good breath support and exercises for pitch, rhythm, vocal tone and phrasing. Students perform a song of their choice, and we workshop ideas for song development, performance and nerve management.
