BIGSOUND 2019 Speaker Focus: Mike Sniper

Position/Title: Founder/CEO at Captured Tracks

How did you first become involved in the music industry and how did you end up where you are today? I started as a pick and packer for a mail order and record store in 1997. I was touring in bands and working in record stores until 11 years ago when I started the label. I come from more of a talent scout and A&R perspective and learned the music biz later. 

What's been the biggest change in the music industry you've seen over the past 12 months? Formerly coveted PR coverage (ie, Pitchfork Best New Music) no longer having the impact on sales they once did. That and a lot of people making all kinds of predictions when the reality is no one actually knows where it's going. I hate speculation. 

What do you think will be the biggest issue affecting the music industry in the next 12 months and why? I think it's just branching into different businesses, really. You have acts who are purely focused on live performance revenue, others more traditional recording royalties and then those seeking to be one of 22 writers on a hit for their small cut. I think that will continue to splinter. 

What advice would you give young practitioners in your area starting out today? Don't be sensitive. 

What will you be primarily discussing during your appearance at the BIGSOUND conference and what are you hoping that people will be able to learn from your panel? I’m sort of confused as to what I am talking about, but I'll be fine either way. Look forward to meeting as many of you all as possible. 

What advice do you have for BIGSOUND first-timers? Take advantage of all the connections. Make an effort to talk to artists, not just managers. Listen to all the artists who are playing, make a schedule to see the ones you want.

What's your favourite BIGSOUND memory? It's all a fond memory, save when I got stuck in the elevator.
