BIGSOUND 2016 Speaker Focus: Stephen Goodhew

6 September 2016 | 3:43 pm | Artist Submission

Organisation: FBi Radio, Music Director

How did you first become involved in the music business and how did you end up where you are today? By accident! I won an internship in a competition and didn't do too bad! Fast forward nearly seven years and here I am now.

What's been the biggest change in the music business you've seen over the past 12 months? I don't know that there have been any seismic shifts but the re-emergence of funk has been fun!

What do you think will be the biggest issue affecting the music industry in the next 12 months and why? Hard to say, but I get the sense there's a growing feeling among artists that it's possible to have a viable career without a record deal. Acts like Chance and Frank exemplify this I think.

What advice would you give young practitioners in your area starting out today? If you're in it for the money then you're in for a rude shock.

What will you be primarily discussing during your appearance at the BIGSOUND conference? Success; what it looks like, feels like and how you define it, whether you're a label, booker, management or punter.

What are you hoping that people will be able to learn from your panel/interview? That there are a lot of different ways an artist can be successful and just because they're not ticking all the boxes doesn't mean they've failed.

What do you personally hope to take away from your time at BIGSOUND? A head unencumbered by the weight of a crushing hangover.

Which acts are you most looking forward to checking out at BIGSOUND? Middle Kids, BUOY, Sampa The Great, Tiny Little Houses and Coda Conduct.

When and where is your panel/interview? 2 Sep, The Judith Wright Centre, 1.30pm.
