Organisation: Marauder, Co-Founder
How did you first become involved in the music business and how did you end up where you are today? I got my start in the music industry through college radio. Since then I've grown my career by continually rolling in additional interests like writing, managing bands, and moving the pieces behind the scenes.
What's been the biggest change in the music business you've seen over the past 12 months? The music industry's biggest challenge is the speed at which it can react to change. There's a healthy balance of being a pioneer and sticking with what works that we all need to discover independently.
What do you think will be the biggest issue affecting the music industry in the next 12 months and why? I'm the wrong guy to ask. I'm still trying to figure out what to do with all of the CDs I own. Don't even get me started about the boxes of cassettes I have.
What advice would you give young practitioners in your area starting out today? Work harder than everyone around you.
What will you be primarily discussing during your appearance at the BIGSOUND conference? I am part of a workshop that Stage & Screen is organising that we hope will better prepare artists to tackle foreign territories.
What are you hoping that people will be able to learn from your panel/interview? I'd feel like I accomplished something if I could help someone avoid making costly mistakes they might have otherwise done without this session.
What do you personally hope to take away from your time at BIGSOUND? One of my favourite parts of BIGSOUND is being able to meet the Australian music industry face-to-face. It's a big world and it's nice to have events like this to make it appear smaller.
Which acts are you most looking forward to checking out at BIGSOUND? I have obsessively gone through all 150+ artists playing this year. I'm not sharing my hot tips; put in the legwork yourself. Or don't, because the odds are pretty good you'll stumble into something awesome.
When and where is your panel/interview? 8 Sep, Cupo, 2.00pm.
