It's been called the 'emotional heart' of Big Scary's new album and it definitely pulls at the heart strings..

More Big Scary More Big Scary

Big Scary have an important place in my musical heart; their album Not Art was one of the first albums I ever reviewed and dived into properly. Sure I adored albums when I was younger but I spent so much time on this review, teasing out the most minute elements of Not Art for my own blog. In retrospect it was a pretty average review. And through that I almost put myself off Big Scary, such an intense listening period removed the need for me to hear them despite loving them.

Hearing Over Matter, the second single from Big Scary's new album Animal, was like seeing an old friend again and finding nothing has changed, they still laugh at your shit jokes and think you really need to get over that person you dated three years ago. And on first look things seem the same but as you plunge into Over Matter it's clear the sonic direction of Big Scary has changed. It's far more atmospheric than anything Big Scary has crafted but it's a natural progression from what they made in Not Art. It gradually builds adding a gentle bass line and a snapping drum line that is weaved against the haunting vocals of Tom Iansek.

Iansek's vocals are the focus of the song, you can't help but be drawn to them as Iansek intones, "Just a clock to remind me to sleep and to wake and to piss and to fuck," This stripped back but not raw approach, it's incredibly well thought out, has rewarded them well. This isn't a huge single ready to take over airplay but Over Matter is the beating heart of the, hopefully, lithe release Animal will be when it comes out September 2.
