"Recording our album was a case of having champagne tastes on a beer budget."
Melbourne trio AM Reruns have channelled a healthy dose of mod guitar, classic pop riffs and more into their 10-track debut LP.
The band’s self-titled LP has been described as “an idiosyncratic take on '70s LA punk rock with a sliver of Northern England drama” and arrives ahead of a national tour that kicks off this week with a hometown launch show.
"AM Reruns is the band I've always wanted to be in, and our LP is the new-wave/power pop guitar record I've always wanted to make," singer and guitarist Andy Campbell told The Music.
"Recording our album was a case of having champagne tastes on a beer budget.
"Most of the music was recorded upstairs at the John Curtin Hotel during weekdays. Partly because we were broke, but it's also a superb sounding room. Our friend and recording engineer Rob Muinos knows how to work it. We aimed for ’80s separation for the instruments, Nick Launay style: so the bass amp was locked in the storeroom, the drums were under a couch fort, etc. Ironically, if you turned the place into a professional studio it would probably sound like shit.
"The idea for this album was to take my favourite 'classic' stuff - Magazine, The Plimsouls, Patti Smith Group, The Only Ones, Johnny Marr - and make 10 up-tempo, new wave singles out of it. It's mod guitar music through and through, literally right through to the sleeve art, the clothes and the haircuts. It's all of a piece."
