Album title? On A Clear Day

Where did the title of your new album come from? I wrote the title track on a hill near Balingup on a clear day; I could see for miles. Metaphorically it’s about feeling down and waiting out the storm until you can see clearly again.

How many releases do you have now? This is my second solo release. Leavin Time was released in 2006. Been a few years between drinks!

How long did it take to write/record? Eight months’ writing. It was my Tues night thang; long neck/try to birth songs. Recording would’ve been quicker if I hadn’t run out of money. Sold my soul to Santa, got a real job.

Was anything in particular inspiring you during the making? I was playing lots of tenor guitar and mandolin at the time. Wanted to make a bluegrass album but the songwriting/moods took me in other directions. Got a bit of mando in there though.

What’s your favourite song on it? Upsidedown. Lyrically efficient and geometrically tidy for a love-train wreck song. Has a kind of Elvis Costello play on words.

Will you do anything differently next time? Not much, really! I’m pretty happy with the songs, the performance and production.

When and where is your launch/next gig? Clancy’s Fish Pub Fremantle on 30 May with most of the artists on the album. Support from Jamie David, $15 on the door or $30 with the CD.
