Against All Odds.
Against launch their demo EP at Mary Street on Wednesday.
Brisbane hardcore band Against launch their demo EP at Mary Street Nightclub this Wednesday. I caught up with front man Greg to talk about the new CD.
“It's got six songs on it and a techno remix. This guy recorded it for us and he makes a lot of that stuff and we just decided to leave it on there. It's cool. We have a CD-Rom on the CD. It's got our website and everything. Chris our guitarist does it 'cause he's a very clever boy. We just try and do everything better than everyone else 'cause I hate sloppy demos. Everybody puts a CD in a shitty sleeve. We put it in a nice cover and everything and hopefully people will keep it longer than six months.”
A lot of the songs on the new album are very heartfelt, what's the inspiration behind them?
“Pain. Things like how you grow up or things you do, friends. Anything I feel strongly about that I don't want to talk about. I get my aggression out when I perform live.”
How's the Brisbane hardcore scene differ to down south's?
“Brisbane's kind of good 'cause people do their own thing here. Down South something starts and then a whole range of copies start. Here everyone's different and even if everyone hates each other they're still keeping it real.”
So what sets Against apart from the rest of the hardcore pack in Australia?
“I think we work harder than most bands and if you're getting up set it's because you're a pussy and don't work hard.”
Against isn't just your typical hardcore band.
“We're sensitive,” states Greg. “We just like what we do and you everyone should come see us.”
So what's on the cards for Against?
“We just want to travel and do this full time, what we want to get out of this is really just to play in front of a lot of people.”
The Against sound is a little different from your normal hardcore band.
“We like a lot of metal and beat downs. We like to get everyone jiving a bit.”
What can people expect from an Against live show?
“Maybe some fruity kickboxing stuff. We put everything in to every show every time. It's usually pretty crazy.”
Who are you playing with for the CD launch?
“Mourning Tide, Love Like A Knife and In Ashes We Lie which are all really good heavy new fruit bands. So come and check it out at a really good club, Mary Street.”
