More LANY More LANY

American pop-rock band LANY formed in 2014, and this year marks their tenth anniversary. Known for their signature synths and dreamy pop sound, they’ve gained a dedicated Australian fanbase. Since their last tour in 2022, they’ve released their fifth studio album, a beautiful blur.

Since 2022, the band has continued as a duo after Charlie Priest left to focus on life as a writer/producer in Nashville, leaving founding members frontman Paul Klein and drummer Jake Goss to carry on the band’s legacy.

Fans have been anticipating their return to our shores since postponing this tour originally scheduled for June this year after Klein was involved in a serious car collision accident while riding a Vespa. With a few months of recovery, they’re set to return with a new chapter that comes with their latest project as a duo – a more pop-rock sound featuring punchy drum lines and electric guitar riffs.

Their fun, high-energy shows are sure to win over the hearts of their fans with their infectious stage presence and incredible showmanship. Here are ten tracks we’re hoping to hear on LANY’s upcoming tour of Australia.

1. ILYSB (2014)

Don't miss a beat with our FREE daily newsletter

Perhaps one of LANY’s most well-known and beloved fan favourites – an infectious dream-pop love song full of lush synth and emotionally charged lyrics about expressing how physically painful it is to have strong feelings for someone.

The music video takes an unpredictable twist – turning the song’s seemingly sweet nature into a dark tale of obsession with a tragedy of an unhealthy obsession over unrequited love.

Fun Fact: ILYSB is short for “I Love You So Bad.” The song appears on Acronyms EP, Make Out EP, and LANY’s self-titled debut album.

2. dancing in the kitchen (2021)

A catchy, upbeat synthpop song about new love that conjures a summertime feeling. Written about focusing on the smaller, more intimate ‘micro-moments’ in life that define relationships– simple things that we often overlook, like dancing in the kitchen with a loved one.

3. Malibu Nights (2018)

The title track of their second album is a heartfelt ballad about someone’s thoughts after a breakup. The song showcases vulnerability and raw emotions of love lost through nostalgic storytelling.

Did you know? Lead singer Paul Klein briefly dated Dua Lipa before the song’s release, so it’s speculated that this track and many of the songs for the album Malibu Nights were inspired by their relationship following the breakup.

4. XXL (2023)

A cool, guitar-driven indie-pop track with infectious rhythm. It’s a song full of bittersweet emotion that explores a new expression of desire and thinking about the world of someone who’s no longer in your life.

On Instagram, they revealed that the video for this song tells a different story - where one’s dream was sacrificed to follow someone else and let someone else be the star of their story. Eventually, through experience and pain, they put the pieces of their own dream back together, leading them to the doorway of their purpose to finally be the star of their own story.

Fun Fact: This was the first song written for their latest album a beautiful blur, which was originally titled I Really Really Hope So

5. Cowboy In LA (2020)

With the intro line “palm trees square-dancin' under the moon,” it walks the fine line between pop, cowboy, and Americana with catchy, relatable lyrics and references cowboy imagery from Klein’s childhood in Oklahoma.

Fun Fact: Klein has multiple tattoos, including a cowboy hat on his shoulder and ‘LA’ on one of the fingers of his left hand. LA is also one of two cities that inspire the band’s name, LANY – a combination of America’s two largest major cities, Los Angeles (LA) and New York (NY).

6. 13 (2017)

A nostalgic love song about the ups and downs of young love. It’s a simple track full of their signature beats with bouncy guitar riffs, infectious melody and sublime vocals. It’s a song about heartbreak and going through the motions of love for anyone who’s lost or confused when their relationship is slowly falling apart despite the efforts to save it.

Fun Fact: The song is called 13 because LANY wrote and recorded it in one day on July 13, 2016.

7. Love At First Fight (2023)

A synthpop track with chantable choruses that will be sure to have fans singing along in a live setting. It’s a song about a relationship’s trajectory and the passionate journey of intense conflict, deep connection, and unbreakable love.

8. Super Far (2017)

An upbeat and infectious track with catchy choruses that highlight LANY’s signature indie-pop sound, Super Far conveys the excitement of a long-distance relationship, even if it’s coming to an end.

9. ex i never had (2021)

A big, bubbly, and bouncy pop track that evokes deep, thoughtful lyricism about an experience where someone claimed to have been more involved with you than they really were.

10. Thru These Tears (2018)

An anthemic track about personal growth and getting over a painful breakup. The song highlights LANY’s relatable yet deeply emotional introspective lyrics combined with soaring melodies. According to Klein, this song represents the worst 45 days of his life, referencing a time when the band pushed themselves to the absolute limit and dug deeper than ever before but came out with something pure, honest and powerful.

LANY are touring Australia this November. You can find ticketing information on the Secret Sounds website.
