Live Review: Davey Lane

As the night wore on and the whiskey flowed, things got a little loose.

Davey Lane played the crowded Midnight Special on a hot and steamy Saturday night. Just a man and his guitar playing some songs, announced by saying, “This is a song...” usually followed by a little backstory that made the experience all the more personal. Lane played two sets to a mixed audience, some of whom were clearly there to see him, and some who just happened to be in the bar. A tough gig in some ways, but he managed to keep the audience in the palm of his hand for most of the time.
He treated the audience to some original songs; You're The Cops, I'm The Crime off his EP of the same name is a little gem and showcases Davey's songwriting ability. The man can finger-pick like nobody's business. Lane also threw in a few unobvious covers by Big Star and The Replacements, proving popular with the bar staff and audience alike, and even threw in a song by his old band, The Pictures, which he said he hadn't played for six years or so. I don't know if I believed him because it sounded like he had rehearsed that just yesterday, but I guess that's what makes him such a valuable member of You Am I. Lane is on his way to being a musician's musician.
As the night wore on and the whiskey flowed, things got a little loose. Lane played a few bars of Wild Thing which someone had requested for some reason, and even played probably the best version of Under Pressure this reviewer has ever heard for an encore. Nice one, Davey.
