Live Review: Rudimental, Gorgon City

A short interlude and a sweaty, screaming crowd welcomed back the band for an interesting encore cover of Paramore’s Now, which melded seamlessly into Bob Marley’s Sun Is – no mean feat!

More Rudimental More Rudimental

Two sold-out shows and an open all-ages gig led to the Enmore being packed to the gunnels on Wednesday night for English four-piece Rudimental. The crowd streamed around the block and into the theatre early for warm-up act Gorgon City. The young, fresh-faced London duo got everyone going with fist-pumping, fat bass mixed with some uplifting house beats with an undeniable '90s influence. Vocalist Yasmin joined the guys on stage for the last few songs including new single Real, which got everyone singing along.

Revelling in their meteoric rise to fame in just 18 months, and clearly overjoyed at their hugely successful first headline tour in Australia, Rudimental bounded on stage, having notably grown from just four guys and a singer to a crew of backing singers and musicians, making them now look like a fully fledged outfit. Singer Ella Eyre was unfortunately amiss, and no surprise guest appearance from John Newman seemed to be on the cards, but the three singers on stage certainly gave it their all.

A huge, booming sound lifted tracks Right Here and More Than Anything into epic numbers, the band and crowd alike dancing around with great energy. The tempo was brought down a bit for Spoons as the trumpet player added some real depth to the track.

The energy continued for hit Not Giving In, which sent everyone crazy before the album's title track Home smoothed things down again. Hell Could Freeze got a fun disco twist at the end, replete with glitter balls and synchronised dance moves.

Charismatic lead man DJ Locksmith shouted for everyone to get on each other's shoulders for Free, and announced it to be their next single to be released in Australia. A cover of The Fugees' Ready Or Not offered a great drum and bass breakdown before the big hit, Feel The Love, got everyone's hands in the air for a mass sing-along.

A short interlude and a sweaty, screaming crowd welcomed back the band for an interesting encore cover of Paramore's Now, which melded seamlessly into Bob Marley's Sun Is – no mean feat! Hide got a big rock riff at the end before Waiting All Night drove everyone into one final frenzy as they wrapped up the set.
