Live Review: Matt & Kim, Jackie Onassis, Citizen Kay

Supports Jackie Onassis and Citizen Kay did warm us up though, not quite with the genre, but certainly with the same energy. That said, the night belonged to Matt & Kim.

“Sydney, you don't seem to care what fucking night it is, you're ready to party!” screamed Kim Schifino from Matt & Kim. At the time she was standing on top of her drumkit, having just slogged it like it was going to hit her back if she didn't. Soon to follow would be another of many spectacular booty dances (with her 'partner in music, in life and in sex', as he called himself, Matt Johnson) and of course some pretty awesome tunes. Even when they're being 'slow' and 'solemn', Matt & Kim had massive grins on their faces, partly because of the novelty of being on the other side of the world playing to a happy house on a school night, but most likely because they know they are the shit (like we do). Simple, catchy and honest, it just shamelessly was a goddamn party.

Schifino's family were in the house tonight so she claimed to be 'G-rated', although the gyrating was perhaps bigger than the family wanted (yay for us!). Handing out balloons and letting off confetti just to added to the circus, but let's be clear, the bells and whistles aside, the tunes were awesome – not only biggies like singles It's Alright, Let's Go, Good Ol' Fashioned Nightmare, but smaller overlooked gems like Lessons Learned, plus, the awesome just for its own sake, Harlem Shake-like mini breaks for no good reason other than because it was fun to do. Two people making that much noise, jumping around, keeping up the simplicity and beauty of keys, drums and a decent hook, they were so much fun. Supports Jackie Onassis and Citizen Kay did warm us up though, not quite with the genre, but certainly with the same energy. That said, the night belonged to Matt & Kim.
