Live Review: Grace Jones

More Grace Jones More Grace Jones

Here is a recent quote from LCD Soundsystem's main man James Murphy about Grace Jones: "If you missed Grace Jones... you're going to find out from your friends that were there, you fucked up." Here's hoping you heeded his warning.

Few would remember Jones's last appearance in Adelaide since it was 36 years ago. Tonight, Jones changed into a new outfit after each song! Yes, after EVERY song. Could you imagine her excess baggage fee! The audience gasped at the spectacle, as each new ensemble just got better and more outrageous. Only Jones can still pull this off.

There was one slight error later on in the night and Jones's assistant felt the full brunt of this costume bungle by receiving a spanking from Jones herself, onstage in front of 5,000 people. But, by the looks of it, they both enjoyed it.

The set was a mix of hits and covers. Iggy Pop's Nightclubbing started the show before Amazing Grace (yes, she was amazing!) showed off Jones's vocal range and Roxy Music's Love Is The Drug received the same funked-up treatment as her recording of this song.

It wasn't all classics, though, and a soon-to-be-released track about growing up in Jamaica got an airing. It had a slow jam/reggae feel and blended in nicely with all her other tracks. The crowd was completely warmed up by this point, even though it was a cooler-than-expected night.

The stage already housed her eight-piece band - Jones's son Paulo Goude is on percussion - but there's always room for a pole dancer, right? Said pole dancer joined Jones and band for a performance that almost stole the spotlight - almost.

Her two best-known songs closed the show, each coming in around the ten-minute mark, and the famous disco-ball bowler hat came out for Pull Up To The Bumper. Jones saved the best for the finale: Slave To The Rhythm coaxed everyone out of their seats. Have you ever seen a performer hula hoop for ten minutes straight while singing? Well, tonight the all-dancing crowd did. And Jones didn't miss a note.

Musically, the band was tight; they are amazing musicians. Jones's voice is still fantastic after all these years. She was chatty throughout the entire show and is a wonderful show(wo)man. If you missed this, prepare for a regretful period of your life!
