"This is safe, masculine post-punk with a rock edge"

More Protomartyr More Protomartyr

The second album from these Detroit post-punkers continues in the vein of their first. This is safe, masculine post-punk with a rock edge. While there are certainly treasures to be found here, the album doesn't do the band any favours. For every moment of aggression and true energy, there are several of complacency and stagnation. The record picks up by the end, but this only makes it more frustrating as it shows how excellent the band could be if they controlled their sounds a little more.
