Album Review: Taylor McFerrin - Early Riser

It would be difficult not to lose yourself in the ambient, soulful world that producer Taylor McFerrin has created on Early Riser. While the comparisons to mentor and labelmate Flying Lotus are inevitable, McFerrin has found his own laptop-music heartbeat, one built on the true components of soul music – love, pain and hope. The guestlist here alone is enough to reel you in (Hiatus Kaiyote's Nai Palm, Robert Glasper and McFerrin's famous singing father Bobby McFerrin) but it's moments alone – Florasia in particular – where this Brooklyn-based muso truly shines. Hitting repeat on Early Riser is a no-brainer.
