Album Review: Bec Laughton - M & R

Despite their retro stylings, Laughton’s vocals lack distinction and need more personality to impress.

Packed to the brim with '90s swank in the vein of Madison Avenue, this Brisbane songstress offers an easy-listening exercise in varied indie-soul. That ultra-repetitive hook in opener/title track – “I've got so much music and rhythm in me” – will lodge itself inside your brain for a long time. Relaxing crooner Number One is your standard Mariah Carey-esque R&B ballad, while some faint, warbly synth tones bring the track partially into the 21st century. Despite their retro stylings, Laughton's vocals lack distinction and need more personality to impress. She plays The Toff In Town, 3 Jul.
