Jocie Adams is certainly a young lady with plenty on her mind. Departing from the melancholy folksy Americana of The Low Anthem, her new band delivers a more vibrant and energetic take on the idiom. There's an almost carnivalesque feel to this album, the band introducing elements of soft rock and jazz to familiar alt-country arrangements. They'll surprise many with their experiments in cabaret, Adams stealing a little from Liza Minnelli as she puts on the razzle dazzle. The cocaine blues snowstorm of Powder Train is a highlight on an otherwise playful and engaging debut.
