Charli XCX is the perfect representative of the modern popstar: edgy, creative and a songwriting talent

More Charli XCX More Charli XCX

If you were to combine a handful of popular dance acts taken from the late-'80s and early-'90s, the result would likely sound something like Charli XCX. The 20-year-old British singer-songwriter – the brains behind last year's mega smash I Love It by Icona Pop – has released her debut record full of musical throwbacks. From synthpop to new wave and industrial, True Romance sees the artist throwing countless ideas onto the musical canvas and hoping they stick. For the most part, they do.

The production is incredibly clean and allows Charli's songwriting to shine. The youngster has a writing credit on each track and is an undeniable talent. Many of the songs are three minute bursts of electronic dreamscapes. Most of the pop hooks quickly turn into earworms and Charli has a knack for quirky lyrics. There can be too much of a good thing, though. The pure pop present in the opening half of the record is almost too much. Thankfully, the latter tracks take a turn for the edgy. Album highlight You're The One opens with a grimy bassline as Charli lays down a sensual vocal track. The chorus ups the ante as it transcends into a dreamy soundscape. The vocals are consistently stellar with Charli never one to shy away from an expletive here and there.
