WAMCon Focus: Nick Yates

31 October 2016 | 12:01 pm | Artist Submission

Organisation: Unified - Head of Artist Management

How did you first become involved in the music business and how did you end up where you are today? I started out by studying music business at various institutions across Melbourne. Out of university I went on to work as a manager and then booking agent, but eventually landed back in management at Unified.

What's been the biggest change in the music business you've seen over the past 12 months? Rapid growth in streaming. It's changing the way fans consume music and both the industry and the artists are having to adapt, but it's all for the better. Some people just don't realise it yet.

What do you think will be the biggest issue affecting the music industry in the next 12 months and why? For Australia in general things like increasing Visa costs, lockout laws and the non-funding of Sounds Australia will all have a big impact on the industry.

What advice would you give young practitioners in your area starting out today? Try your hand at everything. The more experience you get and the more people you can meet the better. Also find your favourite music company and offer to send their mail and buy their coffee.

What will you be primarily discussing during your appearance at the WAMCon? General artist development in Australia and abroad as well as tips on how to grow an artist's fanbase.

What are you hoping that people will be able to learn from your panel/interview? I'm hoping to give people an insight into what a manager actually does and what goes into running a successful artists' business.

What do you personally hope to take away from your time at WAMCon? I hear Perth has some nice beaches?

Which acts are you most looking forward to checking out at WAMFest? The Stoops, Odlaw, Cursed Earth and the band with the best name on the line-up... Dennis Cometti!!!
