Why Frank Ocean's Label Is Pissed Even Though His New Album Hit #1 Globally

How bittersweet.

More Frank Ocean More Frank Ocean

US R&B artist Frank Ocean's long-awaited sophomore studio album Blond has debuted at #1 globally this past weekend, but the singer's record label is not as thrilled as you would imagine.

As AFP reports (via Herald Sun), 276,000 copies of the LP were sold in the US or the equivalent in downloads and streaming in the week through Thursday.

Released through his own label, Boys Don't Cry, Blond was exclusively available on Apple Music rather than his label, Universal Music-owned Def Jam, meaning that the 28-year-old was able to negotiate his take from sales.

Through his deal with Apple, Ocean will reportedly score 70% of album sales as opposed to his deal with Def Jam which saw him receive 14%.

The label will now receive no profit from Blond at all.

To make matters trickier for Def Jam, Ocean still fulfilled his two-record obligation through his debut video album, Endless, which was released on the label (as well as 2012's Channel Orange).

The move appears to have infuriated Universal so much that they have reportedly banned all of their labels from streaming exclusives moving forward.

As well as debuting in top spot in AustraliaBlond also came in at #1 in the US, UK, New Zealand, Scotland and Norway.
