Revered Canadian indie-pop duo Tegan & Sara have had to postpone their planned Australian tour due to an illness being suffered by co-vocalist/guitarist/everything-ist Tegan Quin.

In a statement released this afternoon (AEST), Quin explained "with the heaviest heart" that she lost her voice after falling ill in the last days of the pair's European tour in February and, despite dual courses of both antibiotics and steroids, has not yet recuperated sufficiently to be able to make the journey Down Under.

"At the recommendation of my GP, I have decided to postpone our Australian/New Zealand tour to continue my recovery and ensure I don't do longer-term damage to my singing voice and health," Quin said in a statement.

"It is a point of pride that we always follow through with our commitments, and in 17 years of touring I can count on one hand the number of shows we've had to cancel.

Quin sent her apologies to those affected by postponement, including scheduled support acts Theia, Bec Sandridge and Montaigne.

"I send our deep apologies to our fans, our team in Australia and New Zealand, as well as our promoters," she said "To fans who have made travel plans and those who will be disappointed to hear this news, please know that we will be missing you all this coming week and promise to make it up to you soon. To our support acts — Theia, Bec Sandridge, and Montaigne — we are truly sorry to not be able to share the stage with you."

The siblings and vetern musicians had been scheduled to perform at the Melbourne Zoo Twilights series next Wednesday, 8 March, as well as at Twilight At Taronga on 9 March. The tour was supposed to kick off at The Tivoli, in Brisbane, on Monday 6 March.

According to the cancellation statement, ticket-holders will receive an automatic full refund via their original payment method within three to five business days. Any further queries should be directed to the tour's ticket support channel at help@tixsupport.com.
