Ouch.

More Seth Rogen More Seth Rogen

Movie-goers about to watch a screening of new Pixar film Finding Dory were left shocked after the trailer for Seth Rogen’s new R-rated animation comedy, Sausage Party, was accidentally played to a cinema largely made up of children.

According to East Bay Times, the accident occurred at the Brenden Concord cinema in California earlier this month as the entire teaser for Rogen’s film ran prior to the sequel to 2003's Finding Nemo.

Brenden’s vice president of operations, Walter Eichinger, issued an apology earlier this week.

"Playing that trailer was a one-time honest mistake by a theater manager moving screens around in effort to accommodate several large last-minute groups wanting to see Dory," Eichinger said in a written statement.

"The wrong movie was started by mistake."

"We regret it, apologize for it, and we are not happy that it happened. We fully realize this trailer is not appropriate for Dory and we would never schedule something like that. "The trailer for Sausage Party is not and never has been scheduled with Dory."

Finding Dory predictably blew past box office expectations following its release last week, as it posted a record $US 136.2 million in its opening weekend.

Sausage Party is due out on 12 August.
