Just two months ago, Aussie favourite Chet Faker released new music under his real name, Nick Murphy, and in a new statement, the songwriter has revealed why he has dropped the moniker.

"A lot of you are probably wondering why the fuck I changed my name. Me too, sometimes," Murphy wrote in a Faebook post today.

"A lot of things changed in my life, including me. I learnt and relearnt a lot about myself. It felt like I needed to make that a thing for everyone.

"So I'm not fighting preconceptions and everyone can start the evolution with me.

"The only important thing is that it feels new and inspired to me, and I'd like to think that's all that matters to you as well."

The Melbourne artist will next return home in 2017 to play at the Laneway Festival throughout January and February.
