Celebrated Australian blues/folk/rock troubadour Kim Churchill has unveiled the video for infectious new song Second Hand Car, the newest taste of his upcoming fifth studio full-length, Weight_Falls.

The world in which Churchill moves through in the video — which was shot in one evening at a house in St Kilda — is one stuck in limbo, a visual representation of the end of a relationship, when memories and decisions and emotions all collide and cloud over in a way that is both personal to each individual and universally relatable.

"Everyone has experienced the limbo of breaking up with someone; your thoughts push and pull between wanting to stay with them and knowing that it's best if it ends — almost like a mental tug-of-war," Churchill explained of the clip, which was directed by Jeff Johnston. "That sense of limbo was the jumping-off point for Second Hand Car, and that I wanted to create a surreal representation of what that feels like with all of the frozen individuals throughout this house stuck in a mindset they can't get out of."

Johnston chose to further solidify the cumulative experiences of a relationship in small but notable ways — littering a kitchen table with hundreds of teacups, for example, which "represent the morning routines of an entire love affair," Churchill says, or a pile of suitcases representing "an unrelenting desire to move on".

"It was quite moving to be performing in the middle of these scenes," Churchill said. "It was a brilliant visual experience for the song, and the lighting design was unique and inspirational."

Second Hand Car follows previous single Breakneck Speed in the lead-up to Weight_Falls, which was written in Canada and recorded over two months in Western Sydney, with acclaimed producer Ian Pritchett.

The album will land on Friday 25 August through Warner Music Australia before Churchill sets off for a massive 19-date national tour from Thursday 14 September. Tickets are available now.
