Dulcet Californian songstress Jenny Lewis has announced her return to active duty with a US release date of July 29 (Aus TBA) for her new album The Voyager.

The album, Lewis' third LP and first in six years, follows her 2006 debut with the Watson Twins, Rabbit Fur Coat, and 2008's sophomore effort Acid Tongue. The Voyager, in contrast to her earlier work, draws deeply from the former Rilo Kiley frontwoman's personal experiences, including the process of dealing with her father's death in 2010.

"Making The Voyager got me through one of the most difficult periods of my life," Lewis has said of the album. "After Rilo Kiley broke up and a few really intense personal things happened, I completely melted down. It nearly destroyed me. I had such severe insomnia that, at one point, I didn't sleep for five straight nights. Many of the songs on The Voyager came out of the need to occupy my mind in the moments when I just couldn't shut down."

Having spent 2013 on tour with reformed electro-indie duo The Postal Service, she then called upon the services of veteran performer Ryan Adams, his partner Mike Viola, her long-time collaborator Johnathan Rice, and mononymous icon Beck, who between them helped Lewis bring The Voyager to fruition.

Lewis is now heading out on an extensive US tour, but keep your fingers crossed for an Australian appearance at some point in the near(ish) future now that there's fresh material at play.

Unfortunately, it's too soon for there to be any official video action available online, so until you can get a better taste of the new material, enjoy some debut-era work in this clip featuring Sarah Silverman for Rise Up (With Fists!!):
