Classics for a reason.

Iconic songs from Aussie legends such as Midnight Oil, Christine Anu and The Wiggles have today been added to a national registry that celebrates the country's sound and identity.

Now in its tenth year in 2016, the National Film & Sound Archive's (NFSA) Sounds of Australia registry has added ten recordings to the list, including Midnight Oil's Power & The Passion, Anu's Island Home and The Wiggles' Toot Toot, Chugga Chugga, Big Red Car.

Inclusion into the registry ensures that recordings live on at the NFSA for future generations to discover.

"It’s an incredible honour to be selected…with a song so embedded in the Indigenous world of music, that it went on to symbolise what 'home' and 'belonging' mean to every Australian," Anu said of her song, released in 1987.

"It’s incredible to see the song acknowledged."

Other songs added this year include the theme song to popular '60s TV show, Skippy The Bush Kangaroo, and GANGgajang's Sounds Of Then (This is Australia).

The new additions join a list that already includes Australian classics like Khe Sanh by Cold Chisel, Peter Allen's I Still Call Australia Home and ICEHOUSE's Great Southern Land.
