“A scary place to be is a Mexican jail.”

More Guttermouth More Guttermouth

If you caught Guttermouth’s “horrible” 2012 Australian tour, you might have clued on that frontman Mark Adkins was going through a rough time.

Shortly after the band returned home to the US, Adkins found himself at the lowest point of his life; homeless and beginning on the streets of Mexico. He soon ended up in a Tijuana jail.

“A scary place to be is a Mexican jail,” Adkins told The Music’s Daniel Cribb ahead of the band’s Australian tour.

“Let’s say I was a human punching bag, pretty much. Whether it was guards or inmates, you’re best to learn how to protect yourself, quick, and believe me, fighting is not one of my specialties actually. It was as unpleasant as you can imagine.”

He was bailed out by Guttermouth drummer Alex Flamsteed, and after Adkins decided to clean himself up, he wanted to make a amends for the 2012 “trainwreck” of a tour farewell tour.

“It’s funny, because they said the shows were so horrible, it is actually pumped up ticket sales for later shows,” he joked.

“I had what I call girlfriend-itis, and I was listening to some girl who was coercing me into stopping what I was doing, and leaving for the nine-to-five life. Resentment surfaced and I wasn’t happy with myself, or the choice I made and the direction that I knew I was going to be starting, so I had to ditch her.

“It’s a quick turnaround when you get back to what you love.”
