Gurrumul, Baker Boy Win Big At The 2018 National Indigenous Music Awards

Australian music legend Gurrumul and emerging rapper Baker Boy have picked up multiple awards at the 2018 National Indigenous Music Awards.

Australia’s biggest celebration of First Nations music, tonight’s NT-based event saw some of the country’s best indigenous artists recognised, with Artist of the Year winner Gurrumul’s posthumous masterpiece, Djarrimirri (Child of the Rainbow), picking up Album of the Year and Song of the Year, while Baker Boy claimed Best New Talent and Film Clip of the Year.

The NT Traditional Music Award had two winners this year, with Buku-waṯthunawuy Nininyᶇu Rom and Kenbi Dancers both taking home the prize; the latter of the two got the opportunity to showcase their talent live, as did Special Achievement Award winners the Central Australian Aboriginal Women’s Choir.

Held at Darwin’s iconic Amphitheatre, the evening saw performances from triple j Unearthed winner Alice Skye, Kasey Chambers and Alan Pigram and more before Hall of Fame inductee Roger Knox stunned audiences and Baker Boy closed out the evening with a guest appearance from Yirrimal.

It was also revealed that the Australian Music Vault in Melbourne would be honouring Knox with a special display featuring awards, artwork, rare photographs and performance footage, precious personal mementoes and more.

The powerful and important contributions of another music icon, the late T. E. Lewis, were also celebrated, with Skinnyfish Music’s Michael Hohnen delivering a moving presentation.
