New Sydney Live Music Venues To Get Boost, But There's Some Not-great News For Existing Spaces

The NSW state government has today delivered some very good news and some very not-good news regarding live venues, bars and clubs throughout Sydney. 

As The Daily Telegraph reports, new live music spaces will be able to apply for liquor licenses in Kings Cross and the CBD, while licensing freezes on on the venues will be dropped from next month. 

However, the current freeze on new liquor licenses for existing venues considered "high risk" will be extended for another 12 months. 

"New businesses offering live music as well as broader arts and cultural events will be able to apply to open in Kings Cross and the CBD," Racing Minister Paul Toole said.

"The NSW government is committed to developing Sydney’s night-time economy and helping the industry provide more diverse entertainment options."

It comes after the City Of Sydney announced an advisory panel tasked with boosting Sydney's nightlife. 

"Allowing new music venues to apply for licenses is long overdue, especially after four years of pain and the closure of The Basement," Keep Sydney Open's Tyson Koh told The Music today.

"It's a step in the right direction and another sign of progress for Keep Sydney Open.

"This news, however, does not help the existing venues in the city who have had to cope with fewer patrons. The government needs remove the lockout to help boost the venues and we as punters need to show them some love, too."
