Ahead of their upcoming performances at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, Regurgitator have spoken out to address the "historical implications" of the commonwealth.
In a statement posted online, the Brisbane-founded group said the decision to perform at the event was not approached lightly.
"This week a huge sporting event is underway down the Gold Coast under the title of commonwealth games. As much as this is about a group of nations competing openly in amateur sports in the spirit of friendship and fair play, we should also take notice and genuine pause to consider the historical implications of what the ‘commonwealth' means in relation to colonialism and indigenous communities," the statement reads.
"It would be remiss of us not to consider this in the face of ongoing anger and restitution for actions of those in past… and how we move forward, mend and strive for a future of greater equality and inclusiveness.

"As much as these games emerged from the decolonisation of the British empire it is also a by-product of that empire of colonisation. To achieve real change there is a need for genuine engagement and discussion. We owe it to ourselves, and the people who have suffered, who continue to suffer, to rise above ignorance, denial, greed and fear... and speak about such past actions with a purity of heart and intention."
