While rumours of an appearance at this year's Splendour in the Grass festival continue to circulate, MGMT have thrown fuel on the fire by confirming they will perform in Australia this year.

In a new interview with The Music, lead vocalist Andrew VanWyngarden spoke about potential Australian dates when quizzed about the Splendour rumours.

"There is something in the pipeline," VanWyngarden said.

"I'm not sure when things are announced. But, yeah, we'll be setting foot on Australian soil this year, for sure."

If the rumours are true, it'd be the first time the US act has played the festival since they headlined in 2009.

At the very least though, Aussie fans can expect to see the duo in action by year's end

MGMT released their fourth LP Little Dark Age last Friday (9 February) following on from brand new single Me & Michael.
