Justin Timberlake has opened up on his controversial tribute to Prince during his halftime performance at yesterday's Super Bowl, calling it the "ultimate homage".

Appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the US singer discussed the Prince segment in his near 15-minute set at Minnesota's US Bank Stadium which some slammed as disrespectful to the late music icon.

"It's a moment for me, if I'm being quite honest," Timberlake said.

"I just felt like i wanted to do for this city and something for him that would just be the ultimate homage to what I can consider the GOAT of musicians."
