Watch Vance Joy Play Two Songs That Refreshingly Aren't 'Riptide' On 'Jimmy Kimmel Live'

Brandish that catalogue, boy.

More Vance Joy More Vance Joy

You have to admire Vance Joy's tenacity: several years after it became plainly obvious that he will likely forever be (unfairly) defined by his breakthrough song, the sportsman-turned-troubadour is still earnestly trying to break out of Riptide's shadow.

He further shook off the bridle of potentially being seen as a bit of a one-trick pony overnight on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, when he stopped by to play two tracks, neither of which were his most famous tune, which is kind of a bold move, Cotton, but damned if we don't respect it.

Joy delivered typically polished, ebullient renditions of his double-Platinum 2015 single Georgia as well as horn-laden latest effort Lay It On Me, which has already gone Platinum here in Australia and is his first single not to be taken from his 2014 debut album Dream Your Life Away.

Based on the audience response to his new track, though, Joy's impending second album — though not officially announced, he signed a five-record deal with Atlantic back in 2015, so it's coming — might be just the thing to solidify the singer-songwriter's oft-overlooked depth and diversity as a musician, which his latest single ably demonstrates.
