Due to appear in court next month

The man charged for allegedly headbutting Tony Abbott this week has been revealed to be Hobart DJ, Astro 'Funknukl' Labe.

As ABC reports, the 38-year-old will appear in the Magistrates Court next month where he is expected to plead guilty to one count of common assault.

It is alleged that Abbott was assaulted by Labe on Thursday at Hobart's waterfront who called out to the former Prime Minister. Labe reportedly asked to shake Abbott's hand before the headbutt occurred.

It was reported that Labe was wearing a badge supporting marriage equality at the time of the attack, however the DJ has insisted his actions were not based on the current same-sex marriage vote.

"I must state in no uncertain terms that this has nothing whatsoever to do with marriage equality," Labe said.

"For all intents and purposes legally I'm remorseful.

"This was nothing to do with the Yes campaign, I'm not a campaigner, I'm a lone anarchist that felt the need to headbutt Tony Abbott because I didn't think it was an opportunity I'd get again."

Both sides of the SSM vote condemned the assault, while George Brandis labelled the attack as a "criminal act".

"This man had absolutely nothing to do with those who advocate for a yes vote in the same-sex marriage postal survey, absolutely nothing," Brandis said.

"He represented absolutely nothing other than he was a person who was prepared to be violent."
