Overheard At BIGSOUND 2017: Day Two

7 September 2017 | 4:45 pm | Staff Writer

Wait, can you really go to jail for jaywalking?

"i am going to one session tomorrow."

— One either very busy, or very tired, delegate.

"I'm not going to jail. There are, like, seven cops there."

— Wary musician and his mate weighing up the wisdom of trying to push their gear across Wickham Street, 20 metres away from a pedestrian crossing.

"Uh-oh. I just got paid."

— Someone just realised they had to shout their mates the next round.

"Does anyone else think this looks like a Rock Eisteddfod?"

— Oof, that's a rough take for the folks in one of the bands on last night's bill, not that we'd be so cruel as to name them.

"I shouldn't be saying this in an interview, but our bassist is a teacher and needs to get back in time for his class tomorrow."

— Some bands are just super-committed to being at BIGSOUND. Ahh, those kids will be just fine.

"God, this is so slow!"
"At least it didn't do that thing where it suddenly stops and drops a bit."

— Not what you want to hear when you're in a packed elevator.

"One chicken parmigiana, please."
"That'll be $16."
[40 minutes pass]
"Is my parmigiana coming?"
"yeah, Sorry, we don't make those."

— ...then what... did that delegate pay for?

"What a banger. What a mama banger."

— Sure, that's one way to describe Kylie Auldist's songs.

"Tried to grow a beard. Looked too sex pest-y."

— To be fair, that's never stopped a lot of people from growing a beard anyway, my guy.

ALSO:

— As we noted yesterday, Stella Donnelly's star continues to rise throughout this festival; her early showcase set saw more people show up than could fit in the venue.

— The award for getting an audience up and not just moving but actually dancing goes to the incomparable Billy Davis & The Good Lords. Holy hell, what a time.

— Yesterday saw the launch for both heavy-metal radio station The Faction and new arts space Church, both being held at Crowbar. Love seeing Brisbane locals doing awesome things at any time of year, but especially during BIGSOUND.

Amyl & The Sniffers will NOT be playing their showcase tonight (Thursday) due to Tuesday's injury to frontwoman Amy Taylor; Heaps Good Friends will take their place at the Heya Bar at 11.40pm.
