Chester Bennington, frontman of Linkin Park, has reportedly died at the age of 41.

According to Rolling Stone, the singer died of an apparent suicide by hanging on Thursday morning. 

"Shortly after 9am. this morning, we were notified by law enforcement of a death in Palos Verdes Estates," Brian Elias, chief of operations for the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner, said.

"We responded to the scene and unfortunately confirmed that Mr. Chester Bennington was deceased at the scene."

Linkin Park band member Mike Shinoda confirmed Bennington's death on Twitter just hours ago. 

After joining the US rock outfit in 1999, Linkin Park went on to release their debut album, Hybrid Theory, the following year, which shot them to international fame. 

Linkin Park have since released six LP's including One More Light, released this past May.

The band have sold over 70 million albums worldwide and have won two Grammy awards. 

Bennington also fronted Stone Temple Pilots between 2013-2015, as well as side projects Dead By Sunrise and Kings Of Chaos.

Friends and fellow artists have paid their respect to the musician following this morning's tragic news.
