'Get Out' Leads MTV's Awesomely Diverse Movie & TV Awards Nominations

This is a massive step in the right direction

The inaugural MTV Movie & TV Awards has outdone its more established peer events by delivering one of the most diverse crops of nominees in living memory, with Jordan Peele's acclaimed horror Get Out leading the way with six nominations.

The film is nominated for Movie Of The Year, Best Villain and Best Fight Against The System (which replaces the 'Best Fight' category of years gone by), while its star, David Kaluuya, is also up for his first-ever major US awards in the categories of Best Actor in a Movie, Next Generation, and Best Duo (with Lil Rel Howery).

Big- and cyber-screen favourites Beauty & The Beast and Stranger Things aren't far behind, however, nabbing four nominations each. Oddly, one of the latter's nods — for Best Villain — goes to the character of the Demogorgon/The Monster itself, rather than the actor who played it (Mark Steger).

The acclaimed, award-winning Moonlight is up for Tearjerker, Best Kiss and Best American Story, while Donald Glover's acclaimed Atlanta and historical drama Hidden Figures have also picked up three nominations apiece, along with Game Of Thrones, Logan and This Is Us.

Other shows and movies — and their cast members — that are up for awards include everything from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Marvel's Luke Cage and Martha & Snoop's Potluck Dinner Party to The Flash, Broad City, The Walking Dead and the Oscar-winning Suicide Squad.

Encouragingly, among other changes, the ceremony has also done away with the separate categories of Best Actor and Best Actress, replacing them with the non-gendered Best Actor In A Movie and Best Actor In A Show brackets.

The first-ever MTV Movie & TV Awards will be hosted by popular comedian and actor Adam Devine, of Workaholics fame, who himself is nominated for Best Comedic Performance for his work in that show.

The show screens live on MTV Australia from 10am on Monday 8 May.
