Qld Police Charge Man With Over 900 Child Sex Offences After Impersonating Justin Bieber

Queensland police have charged a man with multiple offences after he was caught posing as Justin Bieber online.

In a press release issued this morning, police have confirmed detectives of Argos, a specialised branch of the Qld Police service, have investigated a 42-year-old man who allegedly posed as the Canadian singer to solicit explicit images from young children.

It was later found that the man had earlier been charged with a number of child sex offences, including possession of child exploitation material.

Police have reported that an examination of the man's computer has resulted in a further 931 child sex offences, after they found he used platforms like Facebook and Skype to communicate with his victims as far back as at least 2007.

"This investigation demonstrates both the vulnerability of children that are utilising social media and communication applications and the global reach and skill that child sex offenders have to groom and seduce victims," Detective Inspector Jon Rouse said.

"The fact that so many children could believe that they were communicating with this particular celebrity highlights the need for a serious rethink about the way that we as a society educate our children about online safety.

"The breadth of offences committed in this instance are frankly horrendous and I want to recognise the efforts and commitment of the investigative team at Taskforce Argos to keeping children safe."

Police are asking Justin Bieber fans and their parents to be extra vigilant when using the internet.

The news comes just days after Bieber kicked off the Australian leg of his Purpose world tour in Perth.
