“Put it this way, would such an event be allowed at the top of Uluru?”

An environmental group has slammed an intimate concert performed by Ed Sheeran last week which was held at the top of Hanging Rock in Victoria.

As News Corp reports, the president of the Federation for Environment and Horticulture in the Macedon Ranges said the concert should not have gone ahead.

"The first priority for Hanging Rock should be the environment, not marketing or economics," Amanda Gauci said.

"Put it this way, would such an event be allowed at the top of Uluru?"

US icon Bruce Springsteen performed at the site this past weekend, as have names like Cold Chisel and Rod Stewart in the past, but all of those acts reportedly played in front of the landmark, while Sheeran's gig was hosted at the top of the Rock.

However, Macedon Ranges Council's chief executive officer, Peter Johnston, said the event was a huge success.

"Hanging Rock has won a legion of new fans around the world," he said, adding that all requirements and environmental considerations were met.

"Councillors were advised of the filming prior to the event," Johnston continued.

"Heritage Victoria inspected the site after and no concerns have been raised."
