Aussie Musos Unite To Fight For A 'Pokies Free' Sydney

Going down this weekend!

While the fight to end Sydney's lockout laws is still in full flight, a new campaign is launching this week to protest the city's pokies culture and a number of Aussie acts are throwing their hats in the ring for the cause.

Set to take place this Sunday at Oxford Art Factory, Proudly Pokies Free aims to celebrate and promote Sydney's nightlife arts and live music scene in favour of pokie machines.

Confirmed to perform on the day includes Tim Freedman of The Whitlams, Joyride, World Champion, Wild Honey, Left. and Bad Deep DJs.

"[This] is all about reducing the serious harm that poker machines cause in our communities," Proudly Pokies Free's Anna Lawrence tells The Music.

"Through a positive conversation, our campaign promotes a creative and pokies-free venue culture. The proliferation of poker machines in our pubs and clubs needs to be addressed.

"We are not about banning the pokies, but with Australia spending more per capita than ANY other country in the world, we believe that this industry and these addictive machines need to be regulated."

The event will also feature live art by Scott Marsh — the man behind the popular 'Casino Mike' mural —  as well as guest speakers (yet to be announced).

Punters will also be treated to $3 tacos, $5 hot dogs and discounted drinks on the day.
