The winner will occupy pride of place on the venue's iconic wall of fame

One lucky Queensland act will take pole position atop The Triffid's iconic music wall of fame with the inception of the venue's own Queensland Album Of The Year Award, with the first-ever nominees newly announced ahead of next month's prizegiving.

Five finalists have been named in the running for the award, chosen from the pool of releases to have been put out between July 2015 and July 2016, when the idea was originally formed.

A diversity of genres and sounds have been represented too: alt-country veterans Halfway make the cut for their acclaimed LP The Golden Halfway Record, released in April; six-piece ska/funk ensemble Cheap Fakes get the nod for Modern Vintage, released in October last year; neo-soul star Sahara Beck is also in the running for sublime April release Panacea; indie outfit The Jungle Giants get a look-in for Speakerzoid, which landed in August 2015; and in-demand outfit Holy Holy — actually split between Brisbane and Melbourne in terms of claimable origins — round out the ranks with When The Storms Would Come, also released July last year.

The winner will be announced on Saturday 5 November, to coincide with The Triffid's second birthday, and will hold the prime placing — one of only two spaces on the wall visible from the road on the approach to the venue — for 12 months. The winning act and album will consequently take their spot next to existing displays for other celebrated Qld acts including Powderfinger, The Go-Betweens, Not From There, DZ Deathrays, The Middle East, The Grates, Regurgitator, Dune Rats and more.
