"This new direction is very deliberate."
To a small group of lucky fans and industry folk last night, rockers Birds Of Tokyo unveiled a stack of new — much heavier — tracks from the band's upcoming record, titled Brace.
Taking to Carriageworks in Sydney's Redfern, the band previewed songs that recalled the band's earlier material, Dead Letter Circus, Tool or even Karnivool, with Ian Kenny telling punters, "This new direction is very deliberate … we feel like we're doing something so right for us."
The riff-heavy tracks they debuted included the title track Brace, Empire, Above Below, Catastrophe and Discoloured, a track featuring The Jezabels' Hayley Mary, who stepped out to offer her vocals.
