Despite receiving critical acclaim and already being named as one of 2016's best comedies, mockumentary film Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping has had its Australian release pulled, believed to be due to poor box office results in the US.

Universal Pictures Australia confirmed the news to theMusic today.

Brought to life by US actor Andy Samberg and his Saturday Night Live (SNL)-affiliated comedy group The Lonely Island, the film, which was also produced by Judd Apatow, was set for a national release this August but that has since been scratched.

As Vulture reports, Popstar opened in America last week to a disappointing $US4.6 million, barely $US500,000 more than SNL comedy MacGruber made in its opening weekend in 2010, which was also a box office flop.

The film has since grossed a little over $US6 million.

Aussie fans will no doubt be devastated to hear the news given how positively the movie was received, which plays up on the tour/documentary-style films that have been released in recent years from artists such as Justin Bieber and Katy Perry.

The star-studded film includes appearances from Justin Timberlake, Emma Stone, Jimmy Fallon, Sarah Silverman, Snoop Dogg, Will Forte, Usher, Bill Hader, Pink, Will Arnett and many more.

Any Aussie fans keen for this one will now sadly have to wait for its DVD and streaming release.
