The annual event's 30th-birthday bash hits Canberra in January

The 30th annual Summernats event has announced its musical line-up, with organisers securing a raft of impressive locals to fill out the bill for the next instalment, in January 2017.

Atop the list of drawcards for next year's celebrations is venerated hip hop identity Drapht, who takes the main stage on Friday 6 January with support from contemporary outfit Spit Syndicate. The following evening, Aussie rock vets Thirsty Merc will treat punters to a retrospective of their greatest hits before the wild-haired rockers of Airbourne take to the stage for their first Australian performance since 2013.

Next year's Summernats won't actually be the first appearance for Drapht, who performed at the event's 25th anniversary a few years ago ("and it was a heap of fun," he effused in a statement). "I'm looking forward to getting back there for the big 30 with the whole band," he said. "A fun-loving, interesting crowd, and a one-of-a-kind experience."

The music contingent only makes up but one part of the wider Summernats spread of attractions, which brings about 2000 of Australia's most outstanding cars to Canberra's Exhibition Park over the duration of the event, along with more than 100,000 fans of all things automotive, for "Australia's Biggest Horsepower Party". So, you know, take earplugs.
