Prince Blows Fans' Minds With Intimate Performance At Perth Afterparty

Part of the excitement from seeing a Prince tour come to town is the possibilities surrounding the infamous afterparties.

Previous tours have seen hundreds of people waiting hours to see a roll-of-the-dice night being a full band jam going until sun up or a brief appearance on a dance floor for disappearing.

Unfortunately, the cat slipped well and truly out of the bag earlier on Thursday when the news leaked that Prince’s Perth Afterparty would be at Eve Nightclub within the Crown Complex.

Speculation was rife that it was a contractual obligation from Live Nation as all of the flair and secrecy seemed dashed with the announcement, and the choice of venue almost crippled the night.

The characteristically exclusive and high-energy affair started incredibly slowly shortly after doors with a mere handful of people wandering around a large empty nightclub dripping with advertising and tacky placards, a far cry from the Purple parties we've known.

Slowly as the night grew on, the DJ began dropping the recent tracks and slipped in an increasing amount of vinyl soul with The Commodores, Al Green and Aretha Franklin all spinning. The gaming floor punters dissipated and Prince fans began to emerge, the afterparty had hope.

As midnight struck, the golden clothing of Prince Rogers Nelson appeared on the upper floor balcony to greet the crowd, the no photos rule was instantly challenged severely.

Wandering the top deck with his entourage, he was spotted multiple times scouring the floor to see if the dancing was heating up yet, then at 1.15am he proceeded downstairs and through the crowd to the stage where a keyboard and microphone was ready and waiting.

Houselights dropped after on stage persistence from his minder, and with a twenty minute set, Prince played solo with his keyboard and whipped the crowd up with a series of improv dance tracks, invited crowd members on stage to groove, and dropped in Sign O’ The Times, Alphabet Street and When Doves Cry before promptly heading off the stage and straight into a waiting elevator.

By 2.00am the club was virtually empty and the event was done. Prince saved the night but Crown and Eve had a solid shot at killing it.
