RÜFÜS Topple Adele From #1; Hottest 100 Sends The Rubens Top Ten

The ARIA Albums Chart has been dominated in recent times by a number of high profile overseas talent including Adele, the late David Bowie and Justin Bieber, but Aussie dance group RÜFÜS have done their country proud by taking out the #1 spot this week with their new album, Bloom.

Just as the mid-week charts predicted, the Sydney trio knocked Adele from top spot (who fell to #2), which marks their second #1 album, after their 2013 debut offering Atlas also peaked in first place. 

Rounding out the top five is Bowie's posthumous record Blackstar and his 2014 compilation Nothing Has Changed which placed at #3 and #4 respectively, while Bieber's Purpose came in at #5.

Thrash metal heavyweights Megadeth's fifteenth studio album Dystopia debuted at #6 this week, while triple j Hottest 100 winners The Rubens stormed back into the chart at #15 with their 2015 album Hoops on the back of their track taking out top prize on Australia Day. The Hottest 100 also resulted in Tame Impala's Currents bulleting back up to #16 (from #40 last week) — the Perth act had four songs in the annual triple j countdown. Courtney Barnett, the only other artist to feature as many songs in the Hottest 100 as Tame Impala, saw her album Sometimes I Sit And Think… head back up to #43.

The Hottest 100 hasn't been without controversy however, as The Church frontman Steve Kilbey shared some strong feelings on the Menangle-founded band topping the listing.  

Over on the Singles Chart, that Hottest 100 heat saw The Rubens surge upward with their winning song Hoops, which soared from #90 to #10 — it's highest point after six months in the chart (it had previously peaked at #25 in October).

Also receiving Hottest 100 (H100) bumps are: LDRU & Paige IV hit their highest point so far with Keeping Score jumping from #32 to #14 (it ranked #22 in the H100); Chet Faker & Marcus Marr's The Trouble With Us moving back up from #23 to #19 (H100's #6); Major Lazer's Lean On moves back up from #43 to #28 while their Be Together is up again to #85 (#3 and #98 in the H100 respectively); Kendrick Lamar's King Kunta re-entered the chart at #32 (#2 on the H100); RÜFÜS also re-enter with You Were Right at #47 and Like An Animal returns in at #68 (they placed #12 and #28 in the H100); Jarryd James' Do You Remember re-enters at #55 (H100's #7); The Buzz by Hermitude, Mataya and Young Tapz is back in at #56 (H100's #8); Never Be by MegMac returns at #71 (H100's #11); Tame Impala's The Less I Know The Better makes its first ever chart appearance at #79 while their Let It Happen re-enters at #93 (H100's #4 and #5); MO's Kamikaze debuts at #92 (H100's #60 but she also features on Major Lazer's Lean On); Peking Duk and Benjamin Joseph's Say My Name returned at #99 (H100's #30).

At the pointy end of the singles, London-based producer Jonas Blue has knocked off Bieber's Love Yourself from #1 with his cover of Tracy Chapman's 1988 hit Fast Car, featuring Dakota, while Sydney favourite Flume's Never Be Like You featuring Kai jumped up substantially from last week to place at #2, leaving the Biebs to take out third spot.
