Actor Samuel Johnson Hasn't Worked Since 'Molly': 'I'm Dead Broke'

Aussie actor Samuel Johnson who portrays Ian "Molly" Meldrum in the upcoming TV show Molly has revealed that he has not been cast in any role since he finished up on the two-part series which was filmed in February last year. 

Speaking with AAP (via Herald Sun), Johnson revealed that he spent the majority of last year doing voice-over projects or working with his charity, Love Your Sister, which aims to raise money for breast cancer research. 

"The work I do with Love Your Sister is unpaid," Johnson said.

"The last time I got a pay cheque for an acting gig was last February for Molly."

Though TV fans will recognise Johnson from local shows such as The Secret Life Of Us and Rush, Johnson has struggled to find work in the past 12 months, which included auditioning to be the host of Channel Ten's The Great Australian Spelling Bee.

"I'm dead broke but happy," Johnson said, adding that he believes there are no guarantees of work after the show airs.

"I don’t think Stephen Curry’s life changed that much when he played Graham Kennedy," he said, referencing Curry's role in the 2007 telemovie, The King.

"I refuse to buy into the fact, this is going to guarantee me a slab of work."

Johnson confirmed that he has watched the final edit of the show with Meldrum late last year who approved his performance. 

"I wouldn't mind the rest of the country agreeing with him," Johnson said.

It comes just days after it was revealed that Meldrum had taken a fall in Thailand earlier this week in which he dislocated his shoulder and cracked four ribs. 

"I had the same approach as after his first accident. I didn't want to hassle him while he was crook," Johnson said of the accident, adding that he asked Meldrum's close friend and veteran promoter Michael Gudinski to get in contact with the beloved music critic for him. 

"When he gets back I’ll visit him privately. I don’t want to bother him. The more cynical types think Gudinski has pulled a swiftie, but he is genuinely banged up."

Molly will air on Channel Seven early next month.
